Job Postings Metrics

This page provides a complete list of metrics available in the UK Job Postings API and their definitions. Metrics help you understand the volume, intensity, and characteristics of job postings returned by your filters.

Related: To learn how to apply filters when querying job postings, see the Filtering section of the UK Job Postings API.

For performance reasons, some metrics may be approximations. Salary is defined as the average of all advertised salaries listed in a job posting.

Metrics

MetricDefinition
unique_postingsThe number of unique (de-duplicated) monthly active job postings that match your filters. Each posting is counted once per month it is active.
duplicate_postingsJob postings are often posted multiple times and across multiple platforms. This metric counts the number of duplicate monthly active job postings for a given query. Useful for understanding reposting frequency.
total_postingsThe sum of unique_postings and duplicate_postings. Represents the total number of postings found online, including duplicates.
posting_intensityThe ratio of total postings to unique postings. Indicates how heavily postings are duplicated for the filtered dataset. A higher value means more reposting of the same positions.
significanceCan only be used to rank by a facet in a ranking request, it cannot be used as a totals or extra ranking metric. It measures the relative concentration of each ranked item compared to all other postings in the filtered timeframe. Larger scores mean these items occur more frequently in your filtered postings.
unique_companiesThe number of unique companies represented in your filtered set of postings. Provides insight into employer diversity within the filtered dataset.
median_posting_durationThe median duration (in days) of closed job postings that match your filters. Reflects how long postings typically remain active.
median_salaryThe median annual salary advertised across all postings with salary data.
average_salaryThe average annual salary across all postings that include salary information. Calculated as the mean of all salary values in the filtered set.
min_salaryThe minimum annual salary advertised in the filtered postings. Useful for identifying entry-level salary offers.
max_salaryThe maximum annual salary advertised in the filtered postings. Useful for identifying high-end or senior-level offers.

Facets

The table below lists facet limitations specific to this API.

FacetDefinition
sourcesThis facet can only be ranked by unique_postings in a ranking, nested ranking, or ranking timeseries query. It represents the job boards or online sources where the postings were found.

Usage Notes

  1. Timeframe sensitivity: Metrics such as unique_postings and posting_intensity are calculated per month within the filtered timeframe. Adjusting the when filter will impact metric results.
  2. De-duplication: unique_postings excludes duplicates, but total_postings includes them. Use unique_postings for unbiased counts.
  3. Ranking restrictions: The significance metric applies only to ranking requests and cannot be combined with totals queries.
  4. Salary metrics: Only postings that contain salary data contribute to the salary-based metrics. Salary information may be incomplete or approximate depending on source availability.
